Yuma County Sheriff's Department

Yuma County, Arizona Sheriff's Department 1959

According to the Yuma County Sheriff's Office webpage, Thomas Henry "Pete" Newman was the Sheriff from 1955-1960.  He also served an earlier term as sheriff from 1935 to 1944.  Sheriff Newman is standing in the center in the suit and cowboy hat.  Three identified Yuma County Deputy Sheriffs in the photo are LeRoy Martin, Cliff Bothe, and Richard Havins.  LeRoy is standing just to the right of the Sheriff.  He is in a white shirt and cowboy hat.  Havins is the fourth from the right in the back row standing with the flat-top cowboy hat on.  Cliff is standing in the back - sixth from the right with a cowboy hat, white shirt, and light jacket with a dark collar.

As a young girl, I can remember going into Sheriff Newman’s office.  He had a confiscated slot machine sitting on a small table in his office.  Once he gave me a few coins to put into the slot machine so I could pull down the handle.  Don't worry - it did not turn me into a gambler.

The Yuma County Sheriff Department photo, Deputy Sheriff badge, and arm patch were found in a box belonging to my father.  He and several of his close friends were Yuma County Deputies in the 1950’s.

Below is a colorized version of the above photo.
